Who can become a reader?

Anyone who loves books! You do not need certain skills, training, or education in order to volunteer.

How do I become a reader?

If this is your first year as a reader, you can sign up here: https://forms.gle/rBpiJcnFrpX3EQLNA

If you’ve been a reader for the last two years, you do not have to sign up again.

How many books do I have to read?

We request that you read at least two books. Volunteers are welcome to read additional books if they are available to do so.

When is the reading period?

It runs from Monday, February 2 to Friday, May 1, 2026.

Where can I find the list of books? And how do I claim books to read?

You will be able to do so using a Google Form. We will be sharing more information about this part of the process at our first information session (see below).

How can I read my chosen book(s)?

You will have access to digital copies of all of our books that you can read on a computer, smartphone, tablet, or e-reader. If you prefer a physical copy of a book, consider borrowing one from your local library or buying one from retailers like Thriftbooks.com or Bookshop.org. We will not be able to provide physical books to volunteers.

What happens if I claim a book but can’t finish it?

If you are unable to finish a book because you didn’t like it, please complete a book evaluation and let us know why you didn’t like it. If you are unable to finish a book for any other reason, please move on to another book. You do not need to notify us.

What criteria should I use when evaluating a book?

We don’t have specific criteria. Our award recognizes works that reflect the rich diversity of America's races, ethnicities, and experiences, exploring the complexity of our nation’s tapestry. We seek stories that capture the essence of the American experience and address themes such as identity, freedom, migration, inequality, the American landscape, and much more.

How do I complete my book evaluation?

A link to the book evaluation form will be sent at the beginning of February.

How detailed should my book evaluation be?

Comments should be clear and specific but concise. Long essays are not required.

What if I know the author or publisher?

If you have a conflict of interest (personal, professional, or financial), do not read the book. Please choose another book on our list.

Can I discuss a book with other readers?

Yes. You can do so by accessing our Google Group: mtavla-readers@googlegroups.com

What if I encounter technical problems?

Post your question in the Google Group (mtavla-readers@googlegroups.com) or speak to the coordinator at his office hours on Wednesdays at 11am (U.S. Eastern Time).

What if a book contains distressing or sensitive material?

If you are unable to continue reading, please stop and read another book. You are not required to finish a book that causes distress.

Will I be credited for participating?

Volunteer readers are typically acknowledged publicly unless they request anonymity.

Will I be told which books advance or win?

Public results will be announced when the award decisions are finalized. Individual book outcomes are not shared during the process.

What do I do if I have any questions or concerns?

There will be an information session on Wednesday, January 28 at 11am. There will be office hours every Wednesday thereafter from 11am to 12pm (U.S. Eastern Time). You can access the “office” by using this Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/geLaOfIrRnqZDKmq_sTKUA

What are the benefits of being a reader?

You will help in choosing a winner for a prestigious prize! Also, all readers have a 20% discount at our gift shop—both online (use code THANKSREADER) and at the Mark Twain House & Museum. All “super-reader” volunteers who read and score five books or more will be included in a drawing, with three lucky winners receiving a signed copy of the winning book and a FREE ticket to the awards dinner ($250 value).

Can I volunteer with my friends or family?

Yes, the more the merrier! Please forward to them any relevant information.
